Aluminium vs uPVC Windows in the UAE: Which is Better?

If you're replacing windows in Abu Dhabi, you'll quickly run into the same fork in the road: aluminium or uPVC. Both have advantages. The right choice depends less on which is "better" overall and more on what you're trying to do, and where in the UAE the window will live.

The short answer

For most Abu Dhabi villas and apartments, thermal-break aluminium with double-glazed low-E glass is the better choice — particularly for sliding doors, large openings, and any window facing direct sun. uPVC remains a sensible option for smaller residential casement windows where budget is tight and the opening is north-facing or shaded.

How they compare

Heat performance

uPVC has a lower thermal conductivity than untreated aluminium, so historically uPVC was the energy-efficient choice. But modern thermal-break aluminium profiles include a polyamide insulator inside the frame that closes that gap. With a properly specified low-E double-glazed unit, thermal-break aluminium performs comparably to uPVC in the UAE — and often outperforms it on large sliding doors, where uPVC frames have to be much thicker to carry the load.

UV and heat stability

This is where aluminium pulls ahead in the UAE. Powder-coated aluminium handles direct sun for decades without fading, warping or cracking. Lower-quality uPVC can yellow, become brittle or distort under sustained UAE summer exposure (50°C+ surface temperatures on south-facing facades). Premium uPVC brands have improved on this, but the bar is higher than in temperate climates.

Strength and span

Aluminium is structurally stronger. That matters for:

  • Sliding doors over 2.4 m wide
  • Floor-to-ceiling glass
  • Bi-fold and lift-and-slide systems
  • Anywhere wind load is a concern (towers, seafront, exposed corners)

uPVC reinforced with steel cores can do a lot of this, but the frame depths get bulky and the system loses its aesthetic edge.

Look and finish

Aluminium frames are slimmer, sharper, and more architecturally flexible. Powder coat available in matte black, anthracite, white, bronze, wood-effect — all stable under UAE sun. uPVC tends to be white, off-white or limited-pallet laminated wood-effect.

Cost

uPVC is typically 15–30% cheaper than thermal-break aluminium for like-for-like residential casement windows. For sliding doors and large openings, the gap narrows because uPVC needs more reinforcement.

Recommendations by use case

  • Villa with sliding doors to a garden: thermal-break aluminium
  • Apartment with smaller casement windows: either is fine; uPVC saves money
  • Seafront or high-rise: thermal-break aluminium
  • South or west-facing windows: aluminium with low-E coating
  • Bedroom windows on a shaded north side: uPVC is acceptable

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing single-glazed. Whatever frame you use, double-glazing with low-E coating is essential in the UAE.
  • Ignoring the gasket spec. Both systems leak air through poor gaskets. Make sure your contractor specifies EPDM seals.
  • Not asking about thermal break. If aluminium is quoted without thermal break, it will conduct heat straight into the room.

FAQ

Is aluminium hotter than uPVC?

Untreated aluminium conducts heat more than uPVC. Thermal-break aluminium closes that gap and performs comparably to uPVC, with better strength and aesthetics.

Does uPVC yellow in UAE sun?

Lower-quality uPVC can yellow or distort under prolonged UAE sun exposure. Premium brands hold up better but generally lag aluminium for UV stability.

Which is more expensive — aluminium or uPVC?

Like-for-like, uPVC is typically 15–30% cheaper for small residential windows. The gap shrinks for sliding doors and large spans.
