Types of Glass for Shower Cubicles — A Buyer's Guide

Shower glass is one of the few glazing decisions where you'll touch the result every day. The right glass is safe under impact, easy to clean, doesn't fog up, and looks good for years. Here are the main types we install in Abu Dhabi villas and apartments.

Tempered (toughened) glass — the standard

All shower cubicles in the UAE should use tempered safety glass. We typically use 8 mm or 10 mm tempered glass for shower screens. Tempered glass is heat-treated to be 4–5× stronger than annealed glass; on impact it shatters into small blunt pebbles, not sharp shards.

Tempered is the default for hinged, sliding and walk-in enclosures. It's also clear, allowing maximum daylight into a small bathroom.

Laminated glass — extra safety

Laminated glass bonds two glass panes around a PVB or SGP interlayer. Even if both panes break, the interlayer holds the pieces in place — so the glass stays in the frame. We use laminated glass in:

  • Children's bathrooms or family use
  • Locations where impact is more likely (poolside cabanas, gym showers)
  • Overhead fixed panels (above doors)

Anti-stain (hydrophobic) coatings

Limescale is the biggest enemy of shower glass in the UAE because of hard water. Anti-stain coatings (sometimes branded ClearShield, EnduroShield or DiamonFusion) are applied at the factory or on-site and act like a non-stick layer — water beads up and rolls off, dramatically reducing soap scum and limescale buildup.

We strongly recommend this coating for any UAE shower. The cost uplift is small relative to how much easier daily cleaning becomes.

Frosted & sandblasted glass — for privacy

If you share a shower with a window or want partial privacy in a master en-suite, frosted glass is a beautiful option:

  • Full frosted — opaque, full panel
  • Frosted band — 60 cm at eye height with clear above and below
  • Sandblasted pattern — custom motif or geometric design

Tinted & bronze glass

For luxury bathrooms with neutral palettes, lightly tinted glass (smoke, bronze, or grey) softens the visual impact of the glass and makes the cubicle disappear into the room. Always specify tempered + tinted, not just tinted.

Recommended specs

  • Standard frameless walk-in: 10 mm tempered + anti-stain coating
  • Hinged door enclosure: 8 mm tempered with high-quality hinges
  • Family bathroom: 8.76 mm laminated tempered + anti-stain
  • Master en-suite (luxury): 10 mm tempered tinted + anti-stain

FAQ

Is 8 mm or 10 mm glass better for showers?

Both are safe. 10 mm feels more substantial and is preferred for tall walk-in enclosures. 8 mm is fine for standard hinged-door enclosures and reduces overall weight on hardware.

How often should I reapply anti-stain coating?

Factory-applied premium coatings last 5–10 years with normal cleaning. Spray-on consumer products typically need re-application every 3–6 months.

Does tempered glass need to be laminated too?

For most residential showers — no. Tempered alone is safe. Laminated tempered is optional for kids' bathrooms or impact-prone locations.
